Finding the right health insurance can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re comparing premiums, deductibles, provider networks and coverage options. But did you know you may have options outside of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace?

Private individual and family health insurance plans are available directly through insurance carriers and may be worth exploring depending on your needs and budget.

What Is Private Individual Health Insurance?

Private individual health insurance is coverage purchased directly from an insurance carrier rather than through Healthcare.gov.

These plans may offer different premiums, deductibles, copays and provider networks. For individuals and families who don’t qualify for ACA premium subsidies, exploring private coverage may be a good option.

Who Should Consider Private Health Insurance?

Private individual health insurance may be worth considering if you:

  • Are self-employed or don’t have access to employer-sponsored coverage.
  • Don’t qualify for ACA premium subsidies.
  • Want to explore different provider networks or plan designs.
  • Are looking for coverage that better fits your healthcare needs and budget.

The key is understanding what’s available and comparing your options before making a decision.

When Can You Enroll?

Open Enrollment runs November 1 through December 15 for coverage beginning January 1.

Outside of Open Enrollment, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you experience certain life changes, including losing employer coverage, getting married, having a child or turning 26 and losing coverage under a parent’s plan.

Most Special Enrollment Periods allow 60 days from the qualifying event to enroll, although eligibility and deadlines can vary.
